Railroad Park Resort

In UpState California, let your little engineers sleep in a real caboose

If you’ve got one of those kids who can’t get enough of trains (and maybe you secretly like them too), let him or her have a dream getaway at this unusual lodging in California’s Shasta Cascade region. The Railroad Park Resort, surrounded by lush and rugged forestlands in Dunsmuir, about 211 miles north of Sacramento, features 12 cupola-topped cabooses big enough for families (there are separate cabooses and converted box cars for adults only). Each caboose sleeps up to five, and includes a private bathroom, a mini-fridge, and microwave. Keep in mind that train rides are not offered at Railroad Park Resort—all the train cars are stationary.

For groups looking for a little more space, book one of the resort’s vintage cabins. A 45-unit RV park and tent campground is also on the premises (map), and a gift shop offers vintage railroad–themed items, toys, and other souvenirs.

A swimming pool and hot soaking pool add to the outdoor fun. The jagged formations of Castle Crags State Park make a dramatic backdrop for some of the railcars, and the resort is only two miles from the lower Castle Crags section of the Pacific Crest Trail, making it a convenient lodging option for hikers. Other favorite hiking routes and destinations nearby include Black Butte Trailhead, Sacramento River Vista Point, and Hedge Creek Falls. There’s also an on-site creek for splashing in summer. The resort’s Dining Car Restaurant and lounge (open for dinner, Wednesdays through Sundays, vegan and vegetarian dishes available) is—naturally—housed in antique dining cars. During warmer months, enjoy a cocktail on the outdoor patio while you take in the view of Castle Crags.
